Discussion: Demise of a Dream? Social justice Past and Present

The MSCA research project WORK-AGE-JUST, led by Radka Šustrová, and the Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue jointly hosted a discussion on social justice in both past and present. The event was part of the BKF’s annual series on democracy.

What forms of collective mobilization around social justice have historically proven effective in both democratic and authoritarian contexts? Do individual appeals to justice make a difference? Through what languages—rhetorical, cultural, political—does social justice speak? How was the idea of social justice reimagined over the course of the twentieth century, and how do these past debates differ from those of today? On the occasion of the release of the edited volume Social Justice in Twentieth-Century Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2024), Martin Conway (University of Oxford) and Camilo Erlichman (Maastricht University) entered a dialogue with Fabio Wolkenstein (University of Vienna) and Julia Hofmann (Chamber of Labour, Vienna). Eva-Maria Muschik (University of Vienna) moderated the discussion.

The video of the discussion is available on the BKF YouTube Channel here.
